Indian Premodern Artist Nandikolla Gopala Rao (1880–1945)

Nandikolla Gopala Rao was an Indian painter of Andhra Pradesh and is known as the Father of Modern Contemporary Art in Andhra Pradesh. He was a painter during British rule in south India, who achieved recognition for his paintings on Hindu epics, landscapes, portraits of maharajahs and maharanis of his days. His innovations in the field of painting influenced the course of Indian art for many more years to come after his death.

N. Gopala Rao was born Nandikolla Gopala Rao, his father Nandikolla Venkateswarao. He was born in Cocanada (presently Kakinada) in Injiram, Andhra Pradesh. He hailed from a wealthy family of Zamindars and was the munsiff for Injaram during the British rule. N.Gopala Rao was married to Surnarayanama. He was a self-taught artist who started to paint at the age of Thirteen.

Education and Career of Nandikolla Gopala Rao
Nandikolla Gopala Rao was a self-taught artist. He began with colors and brush when he was just 13 years of age. The Rajas of Bobbili, Tuni, Pithapuram, Vijanagaram and Parlakimidi enormously honored him. They invited him to their courts to paint Kings’ portraits. It was the time when art was not given much impetus due to lack of recognition in the British rule. There was a complete dearth of opportunities for Indian artists.

N. Gopala Rao was the most honoured artist by the Rajas of Vijanagaram, Bobbili, Pithapuram, Parlakimidi and Tuni, where he was invited to their courts to paint the portraits of the Kings. The art was not well recognized due to colonial rule where Indian artists lacked opportunities. N. Gopala Rao is an artist in the style of Raja Ravi Varma. Much of his works were oleographs. Sri N. Gopala Rao gave new life to Hindu epics through his paintings.
N. Gopala Rao's brother N. Venkata Reddi Naidu was a landscape and portrait painter. Nandikolla Venkata Reddi Naidu accompanied his brother to many competitions.

He colored the painting scenario in South India during British rule. The artist’s works on landscapes, portraits of kings and queens during his period and Hindu epics earned him huge acclaim. Achievements of Nandikolla Gopala Rao show that novelties he introduced in sphere of painting had a great impact on the progress of Indian art. Nandikolla Gopala Rao was a famous artist of the early part of 20th century. He was passionate about painting. The then kings wonderfully acclaim his works. The very first ‘Pendal’ (cinema theatre) of this artist was inaugurated at Kakinada. Annually, he used to contribute a part of his income to the temple god of Injiram ‘Pardesamma’.

Style of Nandikolla Gopala Rao
Nandikolla Gopala Rao portrayed men of importance of his time. A number of them were kings, queens and friends. N. Gopala Rao was of the belief that boldness is of a fairly surprising nature. When boldness is blended with a calculation the artist does not baulk from any peculiarity. An uncommon talent when amalgamated with an exceptional balance of qualities at variance, the result is the improvement of nature. It is noteworthy that strangeness in such a case is not the slightest of its magnetisms. A majority of his artworks were oleographs. Hindu epics received a new life with paintings by N. Gopala Rao. The artistic skills he possessed were unique.

An individual painting of ‘Murali Krishna’ is considered to be his paramount artwork. This is an oil painting. The artist in this painting illustrates the way Lord Krishna enthralls by his music the birds and animals around him. Oil painting of ‘Vilasani’ is another brilliant artwork by this artist. Here he portrayed a lady’s figure like a flower. His paintings carve out his great inclination towards understanding on the prettiness and delicateness of women.

Awards and Accolades
Nandikolla Gopala Rao is widely acclaimed for his laudable artworks. He was considered to be the most virtuoso artist of India during his period.

The sphere of Indian art received a huge impact by innovations of Nandikolla Gopala Rao. Achievements of Nandikolla Gopala Rao show that he was an outstanding, pioneering and persuasive artist. He passed away at the age of 65 in 1945.

Arjun is one of the heroes of the hindu epic mahabaratha. Arjun with some brahmins left Indraprasta for pilgrimage. First he went to the banks of ganges ,had a holy dip and was hearing the stories of his ancestors and spending time. a Naga princess called Uluchi, was roaming on the banks of Ganges, She saw Arjun. and became infatuated of him. She caused him to be abducted after he had been intoxicated with potent concoctions; she had him conveyed to her realm in the netherworld. Here, uluchi induced an unwilling Arjun to take her for wife. Here the artist created a body of work that defined rich colouring and often sensual subject matter he made his own way without an established master. Sri N.Gopala rao was a self taught is probably hyperbolic ,perhaps originating with the painter himself and passed on its studio lure.
